Chapter 13

Once outside, I breathed in the fresh air. The observation room wasn’t that big, and even with just two people in it the air got stale after a short while. I walked a little way until I found a park bench, and decided to sit down and take five minutes or so to clear my head. Thankfully, the concrete and timber bench was in good condition, and kept clean by the good people on the municipal payroll.

I let my eyes relax as they once again took in the vibrant colors of the fall leaves. Red, orange, and yellow colors swirled before me and a few stubborn trees with their still green leaves hung on to summer in a losing battle. Behind me, the sounds of life in Chowan Cove continued. Cars drove by, people having a laugh, doors opening and closing showed the world that no matter what happened in this world of ours, if it didn’t affect you directly, well, then life just went on as per usual. I tried to imagine I was alone with my thoughts in the forest somewhere, but the hustle and bustle of my small town prevented that.

Trying to get my thoughts together and in some coherent order was proving to be harder than I first thought. The events of the day had caught up with me, and I was suddenly exhausted. I texted both Helen and Abby to find out where they were, and what they were doing. Abby replied that she was at home, and Helen replied that she was heading over to my place, as it was obvious we needed to speak about the day, and that was probably what I really wanted when I texted anyway. I was going to reply that she was wrong, but decided I was too tired and she was correct anyway. I might have been tired, but I still wanted to solve this case.

Knowing that I wasn’t alone in thinking about what had happened energized me enough to make the short walk home brisk enough to convince me it was exercise. I unlocked the front door, called out to Abby that it was just me, received a comforting “duh” sound from Abby in return, and bent down to pet a playful Trix who had bounded down the hallway to see me.

“Hiya, Trix, at least you’re always glad to see me. Yes you are, yes you are!” I happily took her face and scratched and rubbed it just the way she liked.

”Just so you know, even if I am glad to see you, I still won’t run down the hallway wagging my tail for you,” Abby called out from somewhere inside the house.

“More’s the pity, and then I could give you a dog-treat as well,” I answered as I walked into the kitchen to fetch Trix one.

“Speaking of treats, I’ve nicely taken Trix for a walk for you, seeing as I thought you would be arrested by now, so you’re welcome.”

“Anytime,” I replied, and I could almost feel the eye roll I was sure I received.
